Four young boys die after falling into a sinkhole in South Africa

 


Four families are devastated after a group of young boys fell into a hole and died in Nyanga, Cape Town, South Africa. 

 

Preliminary investigations revealed that the children between the ages of 11-13 were playing on sand dunes near Borcherds Quarry along the N2 highway, which caved in on them on Monday afternoon, February 8.

Europe’s oldest person, French nun Sister Andre, turns 117 today, Feb 11, after surviving COVID-19 last month and living through two world wars.

 

Born Lucile Randon on February 11, 1904, Sister Andre said she didn’t realise she had caught the coronavirus, which infected 81 residents of her retirement home in the southeast city of Toulon, killing 10 of them.

Dutch court orders Shell to pay Nigerian farmers over oil spills

 


A Dutch Appeal court has ordered oil giant Shell to pay compensation to four farmers in the Niger Delta for alleged widespread pollution on their farmland.

 

The four farmers who reside in the Niger Delta region, alongside their ally, the Friends of the Earth campaign group, had in 2008, filed the case against the oil giant. According to the farmers, oil spillage from the pipelines owned by the oil giant destroyed their farmland, leading to huge losses in their products and returns in revenue.

Abductors of 25 Taraba youths demand N52m ransom

 


Kidnappers of the 26 youths from Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State have demanded the sum of N52 million ransom for their release. 

 

It was reported earlier that the youths were abducted while on their way home from a wedding ceremony. 

 

The kidnappers who have established contact with the affected families are reportedly demanding N2m ransom per head.

 

The Nation reported that there is reliable information the kidnappers have moved the victims into a forest situated between Takum local government in Taraba and Katsina-Ala in Benue State.

 

It was also reported that youths in Takum who accused Tiv indigenes of being behind the abduction, on Thursday evening attacked Tiv residents in Takum and abducted 31 persons, including women and children in revenge. 

 

Taraba police spokesperson,  DSP David Misal who confirmed the kidnappers have established communication with relations of the victims, appealed to Takum youths to exercise patience, promising the police was making concerted efforts to secure the release of the kidnapped victims.

A Nigerian woman has been hailed after she paid back the excess money a Chinese company paid into her account.

 

The woman had paid forty-one thousand Naira for a product. However, they didn't have the product and they agreed to pay her back but were reluctant to pay the entire money.

 

Rather than pay her back N41K, they said they would only pay her N38K.

 

After going back and forth, she eventually agreed to accept the thirty-eight thousand Naira.

 

However, she got an alert for N38 million. Apparently, the company mistakenly added more zeros.

 

Despite the initial disagreement between them, she sent back the money they mistakenly paid to her after bank charges had been deducted.

 

Because of her exemplary action, the Chinese company had a change of heart and paid her the complete N41K they owe her.

The European Union has extended Nigeria's Beans import ban to June 2022 over Nigeria's failure to implement its food safety action plan submitted in 2018.

 

The EU food safety authority had in 2015 banned Nigerian beans because it contained between 0.3mg per kilogram and 4.6mg per kg of Dichlorvos, a pesticide when the maximum acceptable residue limit was 0.01 mg per kg.

Justice Babs Kwuemi of the Federal High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, convicted and sentenced one Adelanke Adesola Abiodun (a.k.a. Richard Lopez/ Walker Fabian Gregory) to 18-months imprisonment for impersonation.

 

The 25-year-old who claimed to be an Accounting graduate from Ekiti State University was a sales representative with a private company when he was arrested by the Ibadan Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Crime Commission, EFCC, for internet fraud, the agency said in a statement. 

 

He pleaded guilty to one count amended charge preferred against him and convicted and sentenced to 18-months imprisonment.

 

Justice Kwuemi, the presiding judge also gave a consequential order that he restitutes to his victim, one Frida Thorsdottir the sum of $1,500 (One Thousand Five Hundred United States of American Dollars), through the EFCC.

 

He is also to forfeit one iPad and Nokia Torch to the Federal Government of Nigeria, EFCC said.
